Xinhua News Agency, United Nations, June 17 (Reporter Shang Xuqian) United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs issued a report on 17 that the world population will increase from 7.7 billion to 8.5 billion in 2030, reach 9.7 billion in 2050 and 11 billion in 2100.

The report, World Population Outlook 2019: Summary of Discovery, says that between now and 2050, half of the world's new population will be concentrated in nine countries, including India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Congo, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Indonesia, Egypt and the United States. It is expected that around 2027, India will surpass China and become the world's most populous country.

The report finds that world population growth is slowing and more countries are experiencing population shrinkage. From now on to 2050, the number of countries or regions with shrinking population will increase to 55, of which 26 countries or regions will shrink by more than 10%.

According to the report, the average fertility rate of women worldwide has dropped from 3.2 in 1990 to 2.5 today. By 2050, the global average fertility rate for women will continue to decline to 2.2.

According to the report, the aging of the world's population is increasing, and the population aged 65 and over will become the fastest growing age group. At present, about 9% of the world's population is over 65 years old. By 2050, this proportion will reach 16%. By then, Europe and North America will have a quarter of the total population aged 65 and over, and the world's population aged 80 and over will increase from 143 million to 426 million. According to the report, the aging of the population has led to a decline in the proportion of people of working age, which will increase the pressure of social security.

The report says that by 2050, the average life expectancy will increase from 72.6 to 77.1 years. The regional imbalance in life expectancy has improved, but the average life expectancy of the population in the least developed countries is still 7.4 years shorter than the world average.
