At 10 a.m. local time on May 8, the British Columbia High Court of Canada reopened the extradition hearing for Ms. Meng Wanzhou. Meng's last public appearance in court was about two months ago. This hearing will only determine the timetable for the next trial and will not decide whether to extradite or not.

The court finally approved Meng's application for residence in Shaugnessy, and stipulated that a hearing on disclosure of relevant information would be held between September 23 and October 4. The judge wanted Meng to appear in court at 10 a.m. on September 23.

After the hearing, the Global Network Editorial Department received four statements from Huawei. The following is the full text of Huawei's statement:

Huawei has always believed that Ms. Meng is innocent. We believe that the U.S. order to arrest Ms. Meng is an illegal abuse of procedures, driven by political factors, rather than by the rule of law.

Ms. Meng's lawyer disclosed three important matters in court today:

First, the criminal case against Ms. Meng is based entirely on false charges. Lawyers clearly pointed out in court today that Ms. Meng's behavior is open and transparent, and bankers are fully aware of the actual situation of the relevant issues. The PTT presented by Ms. Meng is not misleading. The bank understands the nature of Skycom's business and operations in Iran and the relationship between Huawei and Skycom. Therefore, there is no evidence to prove that Ms. Meng has acted by "deception, dishonesty or other improper means", nor does the bank face the risk of being deprived of benefits because of Ms. Meng's statement.

Secondly, the actions taken by the relevant Canadian departments with the participation of the FBI have caused many serious violations of Ms. Meng's rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Evidence released by the Canadian Justice Department shows that the arrest of Ms. Meng was coordinated by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Canadian Border Service and the United States FBI. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police deliberately delayed the production of arrest warrants and unlawfully detained and searched Ms. Meng under the name of "routine entry inspection". In addition, they searched Ms. Meng's luggage and seized her mobile phone and other electronic devices according to FBI instructions, forcing her to hand over her password. More key evidence on the case is still in the hands of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Canadian Border Service and the Ministry of Justice. Ms. Meng will subsequently apply to the court for further publication of relevant evidence by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Canadian Border Service and the Ministry of Justice.

Thirdly, the arrest of Ms. Meng violates the core principle of the extradition treaty between the United States and Canada and the Canadian Extradition Law - the principle of double criminality. The U.S. accusation against Ms. Meng is based on U.S. sanctions against Iran, but Canada has no financial sanctions against Iran at present, so the accusation facing Ms. Meng does not constitute a crime in Canada. The request for extradition does not satisfy the requirement of double criminality.

In addition, lawyers believe that political factors in the extradition process will lead to serious damage to justice and infringe on Ms. Meng's legitimate rights. On this basis, Ms. Meng will apply to the court for suspension of extradition proceedings.

Canada is a country that respects the rule of law and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. We believe that law enforcement officials should abide by the rule of law at all times and under all circumstances and treat all people, including Canadian citizens and visitors alike.
