Lethal fungi are now spreading in many states of the United States
On April 8, local time, according to the New York Times and other media reports, a multi-drug-resistant fungus called Candida auricularis has erupted in many places in the United States. Currently, 587 confirmed cases have been reported in the United States. The mysterious infection caused by the fungus was classified as an "emergency threat", and nearly 50% of the infected people died within 90 days. On the same day, China's domestic media released news that 18 cases of superfungal infections have been confirmed in China.
The New York Times reported that in May last year, when an elderly man underwent abdominal surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, blood tests revealed that he was infected with a new "mysterious and lethal" fungus, which was quickly isolated in the intensive care unit. The man eventually died 90 days after being hospitalized, but the deadly fungus stubbornly survived. Wards have been invaded in many places, for which the hospital has carried out special disinfection of walls, beds, doors, sinks, telephones, and even removed some ceilings and floors.
"Everywhere you touch is infected, including walls, beds, doors, curtains, telephones, hand-washing pools, etc." Hospital President Scott Lorin told the media that all parts of the room are covered with the fungus.
The deadly fungus, Candida auricularis, has been tested as a multidrug-resistant fungus that attacks the fragile immune system and is now spreading in 12 states, including New York, New Jersey and Illinois. In the past five years, Candida auricularis has been found in Venezuela, Mexico, Spain, South Africa, India and other places.
CDC issues reports to be alert to infection
At present, the source of Candida is not clear. Infected people will have fever symptoms, accompanied by various organ failure, respiratory failure and other manifestations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the United States has listed Candida ear as an "emergency threat".
According to the New York Times, the outbreak of Candida auricularis shows that the world is facing a new and untraceable health threat, that is, an increasing number of drug-resistant infections
In fact, ear Candida was detected in a rural hospital in Kentucky as early as 2016. However, it was not until 2018 that the CDC released a report on fungal outbreaks, and it was not clear which hospital had the outbreak. No deaths were recorded in the outbreak, but at least 20 people were found to have transmitted fungi to others.
In April 2017, a hospital in Oklahoma, USA, also detected a patient infected with multi-drug-resistant candida. The hospital warned against this fungal infection. With the joint efforts of hospitals and state health departments, the infection was successfully controlled, and fungi did not spread from infected persons.
Candida is lethal because it spreads from person to person, usually in hospitals and other medical places. The fungus usually lurks on the surface of the infected site for several weeks and then suddenly causes a large-scale outbreak. According to the report Stopping C. auris in an Oklahoma Hospital published by CDC in 2017, the fungus is highly resistant and one of the three infected persons died.
